Tenerife is a tiny volcanic island off the northwestern coast of Africa which, along with Gran Canaria and five other small islands, makes up the Canary Islands. Home to year-round gorgeous weather and a wonderful landscape brimming with everything from natural beaches and hiking trails to purpose-built resorts and award-winning water parks, this island is one of the most popular holiday destinations in Europe, visited by millions of tourists from around the world each year.
One of the best parts about being on holiday in gluten free Tenerife is eating out and trying the local food. And although you’ll struggle to find any completely gluten-free Tenerife restaurants that cater entirely to Coeliacs, there are plenty of restaurants that serve a decent selection of gluten-free options.
To help you get started, here are some of my favourite gluten-free Tenerife restaurants which serve up delicious eats:
Best Gluten-Free Tenerife Restaurant for Breakfast
Address: Floor 1, Avenida San Francisco, 6, Los Cristianos
Whatever you do, make sure you visit Olive Garden Deli on an empty stomach because you’ll need it! This homely café serves some of the most amazing breakfasts in Tenerife, including a host of gluten-free options. From light and fluffy American-style waffles drizzled with maple syrup to homemade gluten-free toast sliced into huge wedges and slathered with butter, the portions are so generous here you’ll end up taking half of your meal back to your room for later!
Best Gluten-Free Tenerife Restaurant for Lunch
Address: Urbanizacion Playa Fañabe, 9, Costa Adeje
One of the best places on the island if you’re a fan of Italian food, Milano Eis Café offers a full gluten-free menu brimming with pizzas and kinds of pasta, which contain absolutely no gluten at all. Better yet, there’s even a couple of gluten-free beers to choose from to wash down your lunch. If you’re not in the mood for Italian, there are plenty of Canarian grilled fish and meat dishes which can be made gluten-free, too.
Best Gluten-Free Tenerife Restaurant for an Afternoon Snack
Address: Local 56 Central Commercial, Playa Fanabe, Costa Adeje
This typical British tea room is a wonderful place to visit for a comforting taste of home. From rich fruit cakes loaded with sultanas and decadent brownies drizzled with chocolate sauce to sandwich cakes piled high with fresh cream and crumbly almond slices with buttery flaked nuts, Harriet’s Tea Room and Restaurant offers a huge selection of gluten-free baked goods. If you’re in the mood for something a little more hearty, they also serve sandwiches, burgers, jacket potatoes and salads.
Best Gluten-Free Tenerife Restaurant for Dinner
Address: Avenida Juan Carlos I, 33, Arona
Offering up the perfect blend of gluten-free dishes and healthy eats, Union Café Bar is the place to go when you want to indulge without piling on the pounds. They’ve got a huge gluten-free menu which includes gourmet vegan burgers, freshly prepared salads, sweet potato chips and loads more nutritious, gluten-free twists on traditional fast food. If you visit in the morning, you’ll also find a plethora of healthy breakfast options, plus smoothies and exotic fruit juices.
If Tenerife is on your travel bucket list and you’re worried you’ll end up going hungry, don’t be! The food scene might be a little behind the times when it comes to restaurants offering exclusively gluten-free food, but you’ll still find plenty of choices when dining out, no matter where you go. And if all else fails, you can always put on a polite smile and ask the chef if they’ll make you something special.
